Fig. 5-6. Sciatic nerve with nerve roots

Sciatica is a hip dysfunction issue, meaning that it relates to the hip, not the back. The straining of a muscle called the gluteus medius that sits just above the hip joint on the side of the pelvis is at fault. This muscle is responsible for supporting you and giving you stability, especially with single-leg standing. When this muscle strains, the muscle that sits adjacent to it in the gluteal region, called the piriformis muscle, will try to help and compensate. Once this muscle strains, it can thicken and impinge on the sciatic nerve as it passes through the gluteal region next to and, in some cases, through the piriformis muscle.
